They are not, as the name implies, specially designed lamps that have specific functions outside of lighting a room.

You can find transitional table lamps online and in stores. Home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowes offer a wide selection of lamps at a reasonable cost. For a greater selection, you can shop at stores like Lamps Plus or furniture stores that specialize in home décor. Consumers who have unique tastes can shop at stores like Pier 1 Imports or Cost Plus World to find “artisan” style lamp designs. Of course, you can also buy these lamps online from sites like Amazon or Overstock or the online sites of the brick-and-mortar stores.

Costs for transitional table lamps vary widely depending on the design, materials, and style of the lamp. Customers looking for a simple lamp can pay less than $75 for a lamp. A transitional table lamp is type of electric lamp. All lamps have a body, a light socket, and possibly some sort of lamp shade. Transitional table lamps are unique in that they are designed to sit on a table and they can be easily moved (or transitioned) around the room. An "eclectic" interior design may incorporate a variety of different styles of transitional table lamps, while other interior designs may incorporate a set of 2 or more identical table lamps.

Table lamps may come in a variety of styles. The balanced-arm lamp (sometimes known as a floating arm lamp), has an "arm" that can be adjusted. These are often used for reading or writing. You'll often see a balanced-arm lamp at the beginning of your favorite Pixar movie. A gooseneck lamp is a type of table lamp that can be adjusted, just like the balanced-arm lamp, but instead of an arm, the lamp stand is a flexible metal tube. These type of lamps are very practical, but often look out of place in a living room or dining room.

 

Transitional table lamps typically have a flat, wide base to provide surface stability as well as a place for the power cord to attach. The body of the lamp can very tremendously in both size and material, but typically will be 1 to 2 feet tall. A the top of the body sites the light bulb socket and some sort of mount for the lamp shade. Lamp shades can be removed to be cleaned or replaced with a new shade for decoration purposes. Lamp shades for transitional table lamps vary widely as well. There's also a switch near the top of the lamp. Some of these switches accommodate "multi-way" light bulbs that provide varying levels of light (a special light bulb is required to achieve this).
